Tourism Ireland launches braille travel guide

14 December 2005

by Mike Swindell

Tourism Ireland have become the first tourist board in the UK – and possibly the world – to launch their annual travel brochure in Braille and audio for the blind and partially sighted.

The 2006 Ireland Travel Magazine and Holiday Planner will now be available in Braille, large format (A3) and audio (tape and CD) offering assistance to those with sight problems planning to visit Ireland.

Publicity manager for Tourism Ireland John Lahiffe said the move was part of the tourist board’s drive to make Ireland more accessible to all travellers.

“Ireland is a destination that can be enjoyed on all levels, not just for its visual beauty, he said.

“It is filled with fragrant wilderness areas, sumptuous food and many attractions that use all the senses, not just sight, so we hope this travel planner will assist those with sight problems to make the most of their Ireland experience.”

Director of the Royal National Institute of the Blind, Northern Ireland Shane Logan praised the initiative.

“Whether you’re desperately in need of a break or just fancy a week or two away from home, there’s no need to abandon the idea just because you have a sight problem.  The availability and accessibility of ‘Your very own Ireland Holiday Planner 2006’ is therefore great news to people with sight problems planning to visit Ireland”, he said.

“Tourism Ireland is to be commended on their progressive approach in this regard and I’d call on other organisations to follow suit.”

The brochure will include information on each of the main regions as well as key travel facts, festivals and events, advice on planning your trip, accommodation providers, tour operators and much more.

To obtain a free copy of the Ireland Holiday Planner in Braille, large format or audio contact Tourism Ireland on 0800 039 7000.
